How to Build a Stocktaking Barcode List on iPhone
Make an inventory or asset list using only your iPhone. Scan the barcodes, then export the history to CSV or Excel to count and compare.
Copying every item onto a paper sheet takes time. If you scan barcodes with your iPhone instead, the results are already data you can total up.
Before You Start
- Decide which codes you will scan, such as product codes or asset labels
- Narrow the enabled barcode types in Settings
- Turn on sound or vibration so you can confirm scans without looking
Scanning a Shelf
- Work along the shelf from one end
- Tap the blue circle button to save each result
- Swipe a mistaken row sideways to delete it
- Review the history when the shelf is done
Totalling the Results
Choose CSV or Excel from the export menu and you get a file with number, code, format, and timestamp. In a spreadsheet you can then:
- Count repeated codes to get quantities
- Add columns for product name or location
- Compare against the previous count
Because the timestamp is included, you also keep a record of when counting happened.
Notes
- Scan results are not guaranteed to be correct. Check the shelf itself when numbers do not match
- The free version limits stored records and export trials
