Check a Wi-Fi QR Code Before You Connect

Wi-Fi QR codes posted in shops and public spaces are handy, but a sticker can be replaced by anyone. Reading what is inside before you connect is a small, sensible check.

What a Wi-Fi QR Code Contains

A Wi-Fi QR code is a text string in this shape.

WIFI:S:NetworkName;T:Encryption;P:Password;;

• S: network name (SSID)
• T: encryption type, such as WPA
• P: password

How to Check the Content

The iPhone app Barcode Reader X shows the scan result as text. It does not connect for you, so you can read the content first.

1. Scan the Wi-Fi QR code
2. Read the text that appears
3. Confirm the network name matches the notice at the venue
4. If it looks right, connect from the iPhone Wi-Fi settings

What to Look For

• The network name matches the posted or spoken instructions
• The encryption field is not empty and there is a password
• The sticker has not been pasted over another one

Using Public Wi-Fi Safely

• Avoid entering personal data or making payments
• Check the URL of any page that opens after connecting
• Turn off auto-join once you are done

Notes

• Correct-looking content does not guarantee the network itself is safe
• If anything feels off, ask staff at the venue
